Searching for Jeeps has become absolutely mind-numbing, but every now and then I can get a good chuckle out of an ad.

A 2002 Grand Cherokee does not a great gas saver make (13/18) , although it beats the hell out of my LJ.

I hope your Friday evenings are more entertaining than mine.

Saw a 2-door XJ Sport facelift cruising around town today. Blood red and very shiny, of course 4.0 decal and 4x4 badge present . I could pretty much ensure your prolonged depression by photographing less than half of the clean XJs I see daily.

On the other hand, gas is cheap, and this looks pretty clean.

“ (13/18), although it beats the hell out of my LJ.“

What do you get in the lj?

14 is the best, and very rarely.

I averaged 20 on the highway in my V8 WJ and loved that vehicle.

I’m struggling with two problems with the v8 WJs: the v8 engine (at least the HO) has a relatively short estimated lifespan of 150k miles (and good luck finding one under that these days) and it’s very hard to find one with the Selec-Trac 4wd system I want.

Very frustrating, because as much as I’d like to have a manual, the WJ is overall a very appealing package.

I have a 02 Laredo v8 HO.

I beg for 15mpg but love every minute of it.

Overland 4.7 H.O. owner here. Swapped in the selec-trac to pair with my vari-lok axles. It's a great package. Head gaskets did blow at 193,000 miles due to a leaking heater core though.

Yeah, the longevity on that engine just doesn’t inspire me with confidence. I like the fact that my 4.0L should live forever.

(knock on wood knock on wood knock...)

Sadly mine did not have the HO, although I had considered that as a replacement when my engine gave up the ghost (cracked piston) at 160k but I wasn’t in the position to make that happen.

The Quadra-T rac system in mine was quite capable, what about the S elect-T rac is more appealing?

Don’t forget to consider an import from China, they purchased the WJ tooling when Chrysler was done making them. I have no clue if a manual is a thing on those.

I want control, it’s as simple as that. I like being able to decide what the Jeep is going to do (hence, manual when available), and Selec-Trac lets me choose.

I’d actually like more control than what any Jeep transfer case gives me (e.g., 2wd low) so I suppose I could buy an Overland and swap out the transfer case, but money and engine lifespan continue to be a problem.

Thanks for the info, I didn’t know (or had forgotten) about the Chinese Jeeps.

Yeah , control is great. My ZJ had Select-Trac and it was fine but the Quadra-Trac did everything it did but smoother and with better application of power. Even around town on tarmac, the Quadra-Trac was was a better ride.

One limitation y ou’d have with 2wd in low would be the drivetrain components, when left stock a dana44 wasn’t designed to handle all that torque going to just one axle.

Good luck on your journey!

What year is your 4.0? I have a broken piston on my desk from my first one. Between that and the early 0331 head issues its a t oss up between the 4.7 and the 4.0 for me.
